Melanie was born in Alice Springs and grew up in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. She began violin lessons at age 5 and commenced violin studies at the Elder Conservatorium as a Single Studies student when she was 15. Melanie continued her tertiary education at the Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide, completing her Bachelor of Music (Honours) in 2003, and a Master of Music in Performance in 2007.
Her teachers included Semyon Kobets, Margaret Blades, James Cuddeford and Terence Tam. Melanie was a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra from 2003-2005.
Prior to joining WASO Melanie worked as a freelance violinist and violin teacher in Adelaide. She was a regular casual violinist in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, where she had the opportunity to play in Wagner’s Ring Cycle in 2004 under the baton of Asher Fisch – her first professional opera experience.
When Melanie is not playing with WASO she fills her time with early morning runs, cooking, baking, cake decorating and spending time with her husband and four children.
