Classical Music’s Greatest Hits
04.09.2018
We begin the 2019 MACA Limited Classics series with pure magic – selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Principal Conductor Asher Fisch takes us on a journey to the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Few ballet scores are as beloved. Be swept away by the dancing Fairies and revel in the Waltz of the Flowers.
“To witness the magic of Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice or Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony individually would prove to be a memorable experience. But to witness them together in one program under a world class conductor, soloist, and orchestra will prove to be unforgettable.” Brian Maloney, Principal Percussion
One of our favourites, Bezhod Abduraimov, returns to WASO to dazzle with Rachmaninov’s show-stopping Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Next we feature Rachmaninov’s romantic Symphony No.2 and are joined by winner of the renowned 2018 Singapore International Violin Competition, Sergei Dogadin, to perform Dukas’ famous The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, immortalised in Disney’s classics film Fantasia.
The first of our Discovery Concerts features in our Classics Series. This concert explores the evolution of the core of the modern orchestra’s repertoire – the Symphony. Go back to the beginning with Asher Fisch to the music of Joseph Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Discover how these masters paved the way for all symphonic music that followed.
2019 WASO Featured Artist, Nikolaj Znaider, is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after violinists in the world. We are thrilled to have him perform Elgar’s exceptional Violin Concerto on the same violin Fritz Kreisler used for the Concerto’s premiere over a century ago!
Our very own Leanne Glover, Principal Cor anglais, comes under the spotlight for a World Premiere composed by Iain Grandage, one of Australia’s most exciting and creative composers, written especially for her.
Don’t miss your opportunity to experience the Perth Concert Hall’s 3000-pipe organ in action. Saint-Saens Organ Symphony is completely unforgettable and is brought to life by exciting French conductor, Lionel Bringuier.
For the grand finale we take on Verdi’s Requiem to celebrate the anniversary of Asher’s debut with the Orchestra twenty years ago. The WASO Chorus are joined by St George’s Cathedral Consort and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Chorus to bring the house down with 2019 WASO Artist in Association, soloist Siobhan Stagg, Stefanie Irányi, Paul O’Neill and Warwick Fyfe.
