Meet the Musician | James Munro

What is your first musical memory?
I have strong memories of listening to Mozart’s Gran Partita in the car with my dad and thinking how beautiful the music was. I also remember vividly playing chamber music with my grandma at an early age.
Tell us about your journey to WASO.
For the last 12 years I have been playing in professional symphony orchestras in Guadalajara and Culiacán in Mexico, where I was fortunate to have the opportunity to tour around Mexico and internationally. There I performed Mexican music like Revueltas, Márquez, mariachi and even with Banda groups. Music that is not commonly played in Australia.
Previously, I studied at the Australian National Academy of Music and the Sydney Conservatory of Music. I participated in several Australian Youth Orchestra seasons, including touring to Europe. After studying, I worked as a freelance musician with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria.
Have you always wanted to be a professional musician?
From a young age I loved music and admired my family who played music professionally. Playing music as a profession has always been a dream job for me.
Who are your favourite classical composers and non-classical artists?
Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Bartok, Stravinsky, Ligeti, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Lakatos, Radiohead.
What’s something unexpected you’ve learnt from playing the viola?
Listening, diplomacy and perseverance. I find that becoming a better listener (and the ability to focus) has helped me as a musician and in life.
If you could choose any favourite holiday destination, where would it be?
Some of my favourite holidays have been on the Mexican Pacific Ocean coast, either in a hamaca under a palapa or in a cute casita. I love the small villages where you can find great waves, amazing weather and beaches, friendly locals, fresh seafood, delicious local recipes and a tranquilo pace to daily life.
