ANAM-WASO Side by Side
02.08.2019
A 4.5 star review from Limelight is just the beginning of some incredible achievements from our first ANAM-WASO Side by Side as part of our Young & Emerging Artists portfolio.
31 Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) musicians joined WASO musicians - 16 of whom are ANAM Alumni – last week to create an epic 101-member orchestra under the baton of Simone Young. Simone has a long-standing relationship with WASO and ANAM, and has overseen a number of similar partnership programs with great success.
WASO has a long and proud history of investing in Young & Emerging Artists and has been developing this program with ANAM for a number of years! We are proud to join ANAM’s Orchestral Partnerships program alongside Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian World Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.
Our partnership will see ANAM musicians work alongside WASO in large scale orchestral programs, as well as presentations across our Community Engagement Outreach portfolio each year. Our Outreach program is the largest of any Australian Orchestra and this new partnership further enhances the unique training experience WASO offers to young and emerging artists.
This year's Outreach presentation saw 170 students, teachers and carers attend a Harmony Music performance at Leeming Senior High School. A chamber orchestra of 9 WASO and 7 ANAM musicians presented “Meet the WASO and ANAM Strings” which included students taking part in a 'Guess the Movie Theme' quiz, one student conducting the ensemble as they played Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and WASO and ANAM musicians supporting Leeming Education Support Centre students during a hands-on instrumental 'have a go' session.
The response to all aspects of the program was enormously enthusiastic, including from the musicians themselves. Cellist Jeremy Garside, a UWA Graduate and Young & Emerging Artist Alumni who participated in our 2016 International Artist Masterclass with Alban Gerhardt, said it was ... "great for us to be able to get out of the Concert Hall and practice room and see how much music can impact people who may not have the same access that we did growing up.”
We would like to gratefully acknowledge the support of Minderoo Foundation for this very special 3-year partnership which enables our WASO musicians to build strong relationships with ANAM musicians, coaching, mentoring and supporting them as they prepare for successful auditions and professional careers.
